Richard
RICHARD is the animated story of an ordinary everyday man struggling to keep his head up in the face of adversity. He is literally a dickhead. It’s a tale that proves that even against the odds, a real dick can be a hero.
RICHARD was completed in 2006 and premiered at the Cortoons Animated Film Festival in Rome, where it was given a standing ovation from the audience who demanded – and received - an immediate encore screening. It won the festival’s first prize for Best International Short, and has since screened in twenty-five festivals worldwide. It was invited into the prestigious HBO U.S. Comedy Arts Festival in Aspen, Colorado, and was nominated for an IF Award for best animation in 2007. The film is distributed by the Flickerfest Short Film Bureau.
ANIFACT:
The production of RICHARD employed the same filming process as Tim Burton’s Corpse Bride. No film or video cameras were used. Instead a Canon Eos Digital Stills camera was used to individually capture each frame onto a hard drive of a G4 Apple MAC.
Cinematographer Matt Gorrie dynamically lit and composed each shot to achieve outstanding results from the digital stills format, resulting in higher resolution images than 35mm film.
The film’s 4500 individual frames were composited in After Effects by graphic designer Gavin Dutfield of Fluid Motion Design, who – in addition to colour grading – created the visual effects to tell Richard’s unique story. Additional visual effects shots were created by graphic designer Brendan Cook of PictureDRIFT.
Dialogue recording, sound design and mix were engineered by Martin Fitzpatrick and Ben Zemanek of Stellar Sound Sydney. Theme music was composed and performed by Matthew Taylor, while all voices were performed by Dave Lawson.
